On the night of December 25,1776, George Washington crossed the Delaware River to fight the Hessians in a battle that turned the tide of the Revolution. The defeat of the Hessians was a personal victory for Gen. Washington at a critical time.  More broadly, the defeat on December 26 was a major blow to the British forces because the German Hessians had been some of their best troops.

The Hessians were a key factor in the Revolutionary War, and many of them stayed in America when the war ended.
